As part of the discussion on the PA call on 12/13/2023 when we discussed recording a patient not having a fixed address we touched on the problem of homelessness and how some folks provide the address of a homeless shelter - would currently fit under type code 'C' for temporary address, or the nearest Home Depot (by default this would probably just be assigned 'H', unless the EHR knows this is a business address and should not be accepted).

There are also addresses for prison inmates and other congregate settings.

For Public Health surveillance it is important to know if someone lives in a congregate setting (there is an AOE for that = LOINC https://loinc.org/95421-4/ ) as well as identifying if someone is homeless (this would fall under Social Determinats for Health (SDOH) work - there is work ongoing there) and it should be decoupled from address types.

For public Health it is also important to know where to find a patient for follow up (not just by mail) - so may also need to work on providing guidance on how to do that for folks living in tents etc.
