Description
The Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv-NET) is a population-based surveillance system that collects data on laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated hospitalizations among children and adults through a network of acute care hospitals in 14 states.
The project will leverage the MedMorph Reference Architecture along with other relevant existing health data and exchange standards to develop and pilot FHIR-based content implementation guides that facilitate patient-level data exchange on persons hospitalized with influenza to public health surveillance partners in FluSurv-NET. The goal is to improve the availability of EHR data for public health surveillance of hospitalized persons with influenza and other respiratory viruses and reduce the burden of data collection on surveillance officers and healthcare facilities and complement ongoing CDC data modernization initiatives.
The following use cases could be addressed by the FluSurv-NET content implementation guide(s):
1. Hospital-based influenza case detection and minimum data elements
2. Hospital-based clinical influenza surveillance
3. Influenza Disease Burden Project
4. Hospital-based surveillance for SARS-CoV-2
5. Hospital-based surveillance for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
6. Influenza vaccine effectiveness evaluation
7. Death ascertainment project
8. Vaccine verification with immunization information systems
It is the first 3 use cases which form the core of this PSS.
This FHIR implementation guide will use the US Core profiles. If this FHIR implementation guide is unable to use a US Core profile, we will follow the Cross Group Projects WG's variance request process, and provide the US Realm Steering Committee an approved rationale for deviation in the implementation guide where applicable
