Spreadsheets have not yet been officially deprecated, although they are certainly not recommended – and if authors encounter errors in the spreadsheet process, those errors may not be fixed.

Since spreadsheets were an important part of the authoring ecosystem in the past, we prefer to keep the reference to them, but we will update the paragraph as follows:

The Excel spreadsheet method was introduced before FHIR 1.0 and was used for many of the first implementation guides, including US Core. Version management is very difficult when using this method, as files are saved in binary form (.xslx) or as XML files, with the content mixed with formatting directives. Today, authors are heavily discouraged from authoring with spreadsheets and are not likely to receive priority support when using this method.

    Description

Confirm if spreadsheets can be used anymore for IG authoring. Is the referenced page outdated?

Remove this option if spreadsheets are no longer viable.

      Existing Wording:

      2. The Excel spreadsheet method has existed since before FHIR 1.0 and has been used to produce sophisticated IGs such as US Core. A downside is that version management is difficult; either the files are saved in binary form (.xslx) or as XML files, with the content mixed with formatting directives. According to HL7 Confluence, the spreadsheet method “is expected to be a near term solution with more sophisticated (and user-friendly) tooling currently under development,” implying eventual deprecation of this approach.
