      Decision

Will add NOTE in Description & Constraints referencing:

      observation.html.http://hl7.org/fhir/us/core/2023Jan/general-requirements.html#required-bindings-when-slicing-by-value-sets

to help clarify that other category codes are permitted even though the binding is required.

      Rationale

See FHIR-39964 Will remove Must Support from the US Core Simple Observation Profile  Observation.performer to allow Patient or Providers

The slice, with cardinality of 0..*, allows systems to experiment with the categories suggested by the commenter.

The US Core profile identifies which core elements, extensions, vocabularies and value sets SHALL be present in the resource when using this profile. It provides the floor for standards development for specific uses cases.

The proposed codes are not consider "core".  Note that Observation.category is not bound to the us-core slice and the US Core Simple Observation Category codes.  ( see this discussion on slicing codes) Other codes can be used by domains specific implementations and implementation guides.

    • Compatible, substantive

To create more patient empowerment, it would be good to enable the capturing of other types of observations including patient statements or patient preferences.

      Please add a code like patient-preference, patient-statement, or patient-assertion.
