There is good reason to have this many profiles.  They are used as both knowledge resources as well as validation resources.  During their creation, we discovered 5 different versions of "detected, not detected", 5 versions of "positive, negative", and 2 versions of "reactive, not reactive" value sets.  Each version had inclusions that were different from the other versions.  In the US (the profiles are base on US Core) there is a requirement that lab tests can ONLY use the result values described by the test/kit manufacturer.  If we created a single or just a few profiles that combined these values into a single value set, there is a possibility to record, transmit, or validate erroneous data.

This does not preclude an implementation from using a generic profile and then applying these as validations to it.  But, they could also be implemented directly if desired.

    Description

Profiles should be more extensible - as there are approximately 121 Profiles dedicated to laboratory tests (e.g., IVD)1
