If the response is a Bundle, the Bundle.type will typically be 'collection', though it could be one of the other types.  For example, if the operation has search semantics, such as matching resource counts, and page links (next etc), then the Bundle.type would be 'search-set'.

    Description

The last sentence in this section states

If the response is a Bundle, the correct Bundle.type is 'collection', unless it has search semantics, such as matching resource counts, and page links (next etc).

This is not always correct. The current $document operation (http://build.fhir.org/composition-operation-document.html) returns a bundle with type 'document'.
