      Outline of additional guidance:

      • The actual mechanism of communication of error from receiver to sended will be "out of band"
      • Assuming the message cannot be process and thus the sender address cannot be obtained from the MessageHeader. The sender address could be discovered by inspection of other layers of transport such as described by the FAST authentication piece for server authorization.
      • Following the $process-message guidance will recommend implementing and using a 200 or 204 response indicating the message is received and processable vs 202 indicating the message is simply received.

    Description

In the diagram all retrieval of additional information occurs after the receiver of the Notification has already responded to the sender. It is actually the case that there is no oportunity for failure of the processing of the notification and that no additional information might be required as part of that processing? Is there no way that post step-4 data retrieval can fail and if there is how is that failure communicated to the sender?

There appears to be a need to provide additional documentation to convey the anssers to the above questions and any associated implementer guidance.
