mCODE has adopted the FHIR laterality value set, http://hl7.org/fhir/ValueSet/bodysite-laterality, which contains the inactive codes. Unfortunately, people using FHIR will probabl There are three options:

      1) Get FHIR to update its laterality value set (already filed as tracker GF#23866).

      2) Use the CIMI laterality value set

      3) Create a mCODE laterality value set, modeled on CIMI's

Option 1 is the best path, but a new laterality VS is unlikely to be published and available in the near future.

Option 2 is currently blocked since CIMI hasn't yet got published iG containing the laterality VS. One hopes CIMI would work with FHIR to correct FHIR, and then CIMI would not have to create its own laterality VS.

      We therefore favor Option 3:

mCODE creates a laterality value set, modeled on CIMI's, containing valid laterality codes.

      Proposed resolution: Persuasive.
