The value set used to represent drug classes is defined using SNOMED CT drug products semantic classes because only that type of SNOMED CT concept is linked by NLM to specific RxNorm cconcepts. Using this linkage a SCT product drug class can be reilably linked to a defined set of RxNorm orderable drugs. This will not work for SNOMED CT substance concepts. In addition the set of concepts chosen represent the drug classes that are found when accounting for up to 95% of all recorded drug allergies in the HL7 drugn allergy work.
