The MDI FHIR IG will provide guidance to implementers and jurisdictions on the exchange of information to and from a case management system (CMS). The Vital Records Mortality and Morbidity Reporting FHIR Implementation Guide 1.0 - STU 1 (http://hl7.org/fhir/us/vrdr/index.html ) has overlapping FHIR profiles that are based on the current revisions of the U.S. Standard Certificate of Death. Additionally, there are many other components and workflows specific to the scope of the MDI FHIR IG that justify creation of its own content. These workflows include the receipt of toxicology information into the CMS and sending information to jurisdictional health departments. Additionally, medical examiners/coroners (ME/C) have a need to view information from the decedent’s EHR for their work and identifying those data will be critical. Content and profiles from vital records will be reused when possible, as will other vital records standards.

    Description

The scope of this Medicolegal Death Investigation (MDI) FHIR implementation guide includes the content of case management systems (CMS) on deaths investigated by medicolegal death investigation systems. This will include the bidirectional exchange of data between MDI-CMS and other systems, such as jurisdictional electronic death registration system (EDRS), toxicology, and other laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and ancillary workflows whose systems have the capability of utilizing FHIR.

*Added 10/21/2021: *This FHIR implementation guide will use the US Core profiles. If this FHIR implementation guide is unable to use a US Core profile, we will follow the Cross Group Projects WG's variance request process, and provide the US Realm Steering Committee an approved rationale for deviation in the implementation guide where applicable.
