The issue was discussed by the CodeX Technical Review Group (TRG) at its September meeting, and, in a rare demonstration of unanimity, the group strongly objected to including this element.   Their reasoning was that the timing of the procedure is
clear from its timestamp, and the relative timing of two procedures can be easily inferred.  Having a separate field that would require entry to abstract the relative timing of two procedures was deemed redundant and burdensome and easy to screw up.

Sandy Jones (CDC) has communicated by email on on 9/7:

"If the addition of a timing element is rejected, then the cancer registries will accept that decision and use the alternate method to determine the timing of multiple cancer treatments based on actual dates performed."

    Description

High priority request from the CodeX registry reporting and radiation therapy treatment data use case teams:

Add a timing qualifier element to the Treatment Intent extension.

The associated value set would include the following values:

      • Neo-adjuvant: delivered before the main treatment (to help reduce the size of a tumor or kill cancer cells that have spread)
      • Adjuvant: delivered after the primary treatment (to destroy remaining cancer cells)
      • Adjunct: delivered simultaneously to help, assist, or enhance the primary treatment
