The new date search guidance provides minimum date precision for date and dateTime fields.  The $docref start and end are date type fields.  The description is 'The date range relates to care dates, not record currency dates'.  That definition matches to  DocumentReference.context.period.  Period is start and end with data type of dateTime.

This seems inconsistent and start and end on $docref should be a dateTime
